The
DOC is responsible for operating the State's adult and
juvenile correctional facilities and programs. The DOC operates six adult
prisons and two youth facilities under the Division of Juvenile Services.
The DOC places an inmate into the least restrictive setting that is
appropriate to that person's security risk. Two such programs are the
Pre-Release Program and the Home Probation Program.
The people served are:
- juveniles
(if they are placed in custody before age 18, they remain in the juvenile
system up to age 21)
- adults
age 18 years and older who are in custody

Pre-Release Program
Pre-release programs are transitional programs for people who are near
completion of their sentence. The pre-release program is designed to
gradually re-integrate a person into the community. Work, counseling,
and treatment are generally included as part of this process.

Probation
Probation always involves a suspended term of incarceration. A person must
comply with the conditions for probation imposed by the court. In many
cases, the conditions of probation include participation in substance
abuse and/or mental health counseling and treatment.
